Course Synopsis :
This course aims to teach the fundamentals of Glycobiology and the emerging field of Glycomics. From the cause and consequences of aberrant glycosylation to proteins that recognize and mediate the functions of glycans, students are introduced to recent developments in the field. The major issues and current pursue in both basic research and medical applications are discussed in the context of what experimental approaches are available to glycobiologists, including techniques in glycomics mapping and genetic models. The course is broadly based on the textbook `Essentials of Glycobiology` which is freely available online, further supplemented by up-to-date information and cutting edge developments. It has also incorporated most of the fundamental aspects taught previously in the course `Glycosylation and Molecular Recognition in Biological Functions`.

I. Introduction to Structural Diversity and Biosynthesis (1 Lecture)
II. Glycans in Development, Diseases and Genetic Disorders (2 Lectures)
• Congenital Genetic Disorders of Glycosylation
• Genetic Mutants of Model Organisms and Cultured Cells
• Glycosylation Changes in Ontogeny, Cell Activation, Cancer, and Human Disease
III. Proteins that Recognize Glycans : Animal Lectins (4 Lectures)
• Principles of Recognition and Intracellular Lectins (L and P-types)
• Galectins and Siglecs (S- and I-types)
• C-type Lectins and Selectins
• C-type Lectins in Innate Immunity
IV. Methods and Applications (5 Lectures)
• Principles of Structural Analysis, Glycan Mapping and Sequencing
• Chemical and Enzymatic Synthesis of Glycans, Arrays for Glycomics
• Natural and Synthetic Glycosylation Inhibitors
• Glycobiology in Biotechnology and Medicine
V. Emerging Topics in Glycobiology (4 Lectures / Discussion Seminars)
